Hot Yoga

The official name of hot yoga is Bikram yoga, named for the guy who developed the system. It is called “hot” or “fire yoga” because of the high temperature that the exercises are done at. The guidelines for studios who teach Bikram yoga are to heat the room to about 105 degrees and give them about a 40% humidity level.

The man who developed the system wanted such extreme conditions because it is supposed to help those practicing yoga. The high temperature helps muscles to be more flexible, allowing for more flexibility. The high humidity combined with the heat encourages profuse sweating which flushes lots of toxins out of the body.

While there are some people who love this kind of yoga and the extreme workout it provides, there are others who wonder about the safety of it. The high heat is supposed to prevent injury, but some people can actually stretch their muscles past where they are ready to go, causing serious injuries. There are also common cases of dehydration and heatstroke. If you are going to try this type of yoga, use caution and don’t push yourself too hard.
